Touchstone

Touchstone is located on 55 acres of land in Litchfield, Connecticut. This expansive campus offers two residential dormitory settings, an on-campus school, greenhouse, clubhouse, low-ropes course as well as an experiential program curriculum. Touchstone is a staff-secure residential treatment program serving girls between the ages of 12 and 18 who are committed to the Department of Children and Families. With enhanced psychiatric, nursing, educational and clinical expertise, Touchstone provides young women the opportunity to engage in treatment in the community with the goal of future placement either in the home or at a lower level of care.

Gender-responsive programming assists the girls with complex needs including:

• Self-esteem
• Trauma
• Substance abuse
• Self-injury
• Sexual Education
• Life skills
• Pre-vocational/vocational training,
• Anger expression
• Parenting classes
• Healthy relationship development

The young women have the opportunity to build a trusting one-on-one relationship with an advocate counselor, and aftercare services are provided. The educational program at Touchstone prides itself on bringing out the talents of each young woman in order to make their educational experience a success. The unique vocational program offered at Touchstone School allows for the girls to utilize non-traditional methods of learning through the horticulture, building trades and culinary programs.

 The program is specifically designed to meet the needs of adolescent girls through:

• Individual and group counseling                                                                                            
• Family therapy
• Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
• Education and credit retrieval
• Life skills and recreational therapy
• A gender responsive approach
• Substance abuse treatment
• Trauma informed treatment approach
• Permanency planning and transitional supports

Touchstone provides skills training in the areas of graphic design, building trades and culinary arts while providing a gender-responsive learning approach to traditional subject areas. In addition, the Therapeutic Recreation program component provides an endless array of hands on learning and exciting opportunities for cultural, spiritual and community experiences. The young women continuously learn and practice skills that assist them with building their own sense of their own self efficacy preparing for the world in which they will transition.
