A team of NAFI Connecticut, Inc. (NAFI CT) employees, representing programs across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York, recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 2025 Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) National Conference, joining child welfare professionals from across the country for an inspiring and action-packed week of learning, networking, and advocacy.
Held annually, the CWLA Conference brings together leaders and practitioners from across the child welfare sector to explore best practices, share innovations, and promote positive outcomes for children and families. This year’s theme, “Belonging & Becoming: Creating Inclusive Communities Where Children, Youth, and Families Thrive,” resonated deeply with NAFI CT’s mission of building supportive, empowering systems of care.
Throughout the week, NAFI employees attended a wide range of workshop sessions focused on strengthening communities, promoting equity, and elevating youth and family voice. They engaged with thought leaders and fellow service providers, gaining new tools and insights to bring back to the communities they serve.
One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to meet with members of Congress from Connecticut and Rhode Island. During these meetings, NAFI employees shared firsthand stories and data from their programs, advocating for continued support and funding for essential services that help children and families heal, grow, and thrive.

“These face-to-face conversations with our federal representatives are crucial,” said Lynn Bishop, Executive Director of NAFI CT. “They give us the chance to put a human face to the policies and funding decisions that directly impact the children and families we serve every day.”
The trip underscored NAFI CT’s ongoing commitment not only to direct service, but to broader systems change and policy advocacy. By participating in national conversations and raising the voices of those they serve, NAFI CT continues to play an active role in shaping a stronger, more equitable child welfare system.
