Multisystemic Therapy – Emerging Adults (MST-EA) / CSSD Teams

The Multi-Systemic Therapy for Emerging Adults (MST-EA) Program is a promising evidenced based model that provides intensive individual treatment for emerging adults (ages 17-26) with both a recent history of criminal involvement and mental health challenges. The MST-EA program is in a research pilot project initially brought to NAFI CT through a partnership with the Department of Children and Families, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of Massachusetts. The program is currently overseen by the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch, Court Support Services Division.

The goal of MST-EA treatment is to stabilize youth with significant mental health impairment and/or substance abuse as well as other high-risk behaviors within the community through intensive multi-weekly treatment sessions for up to twelve months. The clinical focus is on safety preservation, crisis management, establishing natural supports and increasing life skills to support the youth’s transition into adulthood. Immediate social and family resources are also integrated into treatment to promote a healthy natural social support network for the client and to sustain treatment advances. Youth are treated as part of an interdisciplinary team and can be assigned a life coach to work with the identified client on supplemental life skills, vocational, educational, and social reinforcement needs throughout treatment and for an additional two months of aftercare. NAFI CT works collaboratively with the model developers to ensure optimal quality assurance and outcome attainment.
